The children’s home in Umka was founded at the end of 1944. It was supported through donations of many social organizations, especially AFZ from Umka and surrounding villages. These contributions were in groceries, clothes and shoes, bedclothes, etc.

The school was officially founded in 1947. The teaching system was divided into the basic and advance level, with thirty-five students altogether.
The second period in the school development began in 1961,with The Education System Reform, as well as with building of a new school and the boarding school’s capacity enlarging.
Our school, among the first special schools, introduced a social worker service. In cooperation with different firms, thirty of our students found permanent employment in “Zelengora” and “Umka" factories. In similar cooperation between our school and other organizations, over seven hundred working enabled people have nowadays found permanent employment in our country and abroad.

THE SCHOOL'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE AFFIRMATION OF THE SPECIAL EDUCATION THEORY AND PRACTICE CAN BE SEEN IN FOLLOWING:

-Umka’s teachers at the time made the first curriculum for elementary education of slightly mentally retarded students

-The first educational curriculum to be applied in the students’ dormitories and boarding schools

-The first forms of enabling slightly mentally retarded youth for work in the open economy.

-The first forms of expert team’s work in the special schools, within so-called multidisciplinary approach - introducing a psychologist, a social worker, a doctor, a special teacher and other profiles of expert associates.

-The school had the best equipped media-room which made it, for awhile, the seat of The Teacher’s-training college, and, later on, the seat of The Special Education Faculty.
